■思い出ベンチ

東京都では老朽化した公園などのベンチの維持が財政難のためできなくなってきたそうです。そこに職員のアイデアで、都民からの寄付で新しいベンチを設置する手法を導入したとのことです。結果、大いに好評を博し成果を上げているようで、東京以外の自治体からの問い合わせや申し込みも出てきているといいます。これが思い出ベンチという名のプロジェクトで、たとえば日比谷公園や井の頭公園に申し込みが多くあるといいます。

「この公園をいつまでも散歩していたい」、これは井の頭公園でかつて結婚を申し込んだ思い出を持つ老人のご夫婦が、想い出の場所にベンチを寄贈し、そこに刻んだ言葉だそうです。ベンチの設置料は15万円か20万円だそうで、日比谷公園なども人気の場所のようです。その結果、最近は各自治体などから問い合わせも多くこの動きが全国に広がる勢いを見せているのだそうです。素晴らしいことですね。

ところで、別にケチをつけるつもりは全くないのですが、東京都が職員のアイデアで日本で初めて実施したというのは明らかに間違いです。わが国における最初の事例は、仙台の県立宮城大学です。設置は1998年春のことです。このときは初代学長：野田一夫先生を中心とする経営者の会の皆様にお願いをして、それぞれ学生に対して贈る言葉を入れ、ご本人のお名前も入れてキャンパスのあちこちに設置していただきました。この際はインドネシア製の水に強いチーク材のベンチを現地から取り寄せ設置していったのですが、それぞれに元は英国の素晴らしいデザインのベンチでしたから、キャンパスの景観が本当に潤いに満ちていった光景が今も忘れられません。
