« アメリカ人の日本人観 (1) ｜ メイン ｜ 上海市が突然「一人っ子政策」をやめた » ■アメリカ人の日本人観 (2)2004 / 11 /19せっかくですからもう一つのもっと面白かったアメリカ人の日本人観に関するお話をご披露しておきましょう。それは有名なコリン・フォーブス（Colin Forbes、Pentagram Designの創始者。以下いつものようにColinと書かせて貰います）に招かれて、ノースカロライナにある彼の農場訪ねた時の話です。 Colin自身もロンドンからニューヨークに移住したときはそれほど感じなかったそうですが、ノースカロライナの田舎にこの農場を購入し、週末などに必ずここに来るようになって初めて「アメリカに来た」と強く感じるようになったそうです。 確かに呼ばれて行ってみると全く素晴らしい自然の中で、Colin & Wendy 夫妻はここで伝統的なイギリス系の馬車を引く馬を育てていました。日本の皇室もイギリス系だそうだが何でもそれまでのアメリカはドイツ系の馬だけが使われていたのだそうです。そんな説明は本論とは関係ないのですが、僕はここで乗馬、クレイ射撃、釣り等に加え、ジープで道もない草原や小川を走り回り、夕方になるとバーベキューパーティーをやって10人も入れそうな大きなジャグジーの風呂につかってのんびりする時間を楽しみました。 もともとこの辺りの農家の多くはタバコの葉の生産が主要産業なのだそうですが、それよりもビックリしたのは、村の生活用品なんでもが売られているよろず屋に出かけたときのことです。まるで好人物が服を着て歩いているような雰囲気のその店の主人は、何せ日本人なるモノを直接見たのはその時が生まれて初めてだそうで、しかもそれが3人家族でやって来たというのですから、彼もいささか興奮状態でした。身をかがめ、うちの娘の顔を両手ではさみ「これが日本人か？」とまるで珍獣を見るがごとき面もちで眺めているのです。挙げ句の果てに「何でもいいから日本字を書いてくれ」といわれたので、その辺の紙に適当な言葉を書いてきましたところ、なんと次回行った時にはそれが額に入れられ、壁上段の目立つところに飾ってあるではないですか。こちらも驚いて「もう一度ちゃんと書き直したいから」とお願いして、多少はましに表現したモノと入れ替えて貰ったのでした。 その後、Colin夫妻がまだ幼児であった娘と近い年代の近所の子供たち呼んでくれ、彼女たちが思いっきりおしゃれをしてお母さんに連れられやって来ました。その時「何か日本語を知っている？」と聞いてみましたら返ってきた答えは「ニンテンドー、ニッサン」の2語でした。 「この人たちは一般的に日本人をどう見ているのですかねぇ？」とColinに聞いてみましたところ、通常の彼らの日本人観は「特攻機で命知らずに飛び込んでくる人たち」程度のイメージだから、多分、あなた達家族とはまったく頭の中では一致してないのだろうとのことでした。 投稿者 Nakanishi : 2004年11月19日 05:46 トラックバックこのエントリーのトラックバックURL: このリストは、次のエントリーを参照しています: アメリカ人の日本人観 (2):
